"SHIFD" content between devices

Haven't tried it but looks like a handy way to access notes, links, locations between desktop and phone: SHIFD. Created by R&D team at the NY Times, interestingly.

Beacon and Typepad

I like this. TypePad is letting bloggers who are Facebook members to automagically notify the Facebook newsfeed when they post stories.

Offering Facebook Beacon on TypePad means that you can now choose to share your new blog posts with your friends on Facebook. (Everything TypePad: Features)

Smart of TypePad to make this an opt-in feature. For each blog, you choose whether to be prompted to send the stories to FB in the blog's configuration.

Typepad_fb_prompt

Can't the other sites using beacon do the same? why wouldn't zappos or overstock market this as an opt-in feature to their users?

One thing I don't get about the negative response: don't you have to click OK to these dialogues before the item is added to your feed? I mean, that could be a bit clearer from a usability POV, but all the prompts I've seen make it pretty clear that you can delete any story or that you can say OK.

"Spark Line" chart building tool

These mini graphs make even excel data look good! I've been looking for a way to do this since I saw Tufte present in 1998. Here it is: microcharts.net.

Twitter Blog: Tracking Twitter

Cool new feature on Twitter that lets you follow topics. You've always been able to follow individuals and receive notifications when someone posts a "tweet". Now you can see when any public tweet contains a keyword. Twitter Blog: Tracking Twitter.

Lijit - add search to your blog

Lijit indexes your blog and other content you might have hanging out on flickr, twitter, social networks, etc, making it all searchable. Handy for your readers... and the pay-off for you the blogger is data about what people are searching for on your site and keywords they're using to find you. pretty cool. search results look a bit funky but assume that will sort itself out... let me know what you think of the tool.

Catchy name too: Lijit Search Wijit.

Keywords Squared - kw list building tool

Way back in 2003, I went looking for a tool to concatenate individual keywords into search term phrases, when building out big lists for testing. I couldn't find anything so I had one built. Here it is: Keywords Squared. Tool allows you to:

  • input list of keywords and mix and match those to create phrases. For instance, input "car, truck, new, used, illinois, chicago" and you can easily concatenate these into all the likely combinations: "new car chicago, used truck illinois, used truck, etc etc"
  • or, start with a list of phrases, break them down into individual words and then rebuild into new phrases

If you have questions comments or tips, please post to the comments.

(note that some of the links are to the old v of this blog. haven't completely cleaned it up but the basic tool is still functional)

Widgetbox

Widgetbox:

Widgetbox is a directory and syndication platform for web widgets for blogs and other web pages.

Works with facebook profiles, etc too, so useful to the blogging elite and social networking everyman... Interesting to see whether adver-widgets (widg-vertisments?) can be effectively distributed here...
